The North East Surrey College Of Technology is a large further education and higher education college in Epsom and Ewell, Surrey.

The requirement was to carry out a complete refurbishment of two training kitchens on the second floor of the building, and a new training kitchen/part DDA-compliant facility located in a new area on the ground floor. To do this we stripped rooms back to the bare-bones and re-structured the areas to include building works, running of new services and ventilation systems

Nescot’s brief was to create a bright ‘stainless steel’ facility that would be visually attractive, yet both functional and able to accommodate 20 students plus a main demonstration feature for the lecturer.

The two second level training kitchens are back-to-back with a storage/ancillary area between, and each kitchen effectively mirrored the other. Each kitchen included 10 specially designed twin student work stations which comprised a central sink set into an anti-drip edge design to be shared between two students. Individual work surfaces with personal twin sockets and implement drawers as well as storage below for tote boxes to accommodate utensils were provided. Every station also has its own specialist TV screen which enables video links between teacher and students.

On the ground floor a similar facility was provided but in this case includes two DDA work stations specifically designed for wheelchair users, which features adjustable height tables. The client commented “It looks fantastic. Thank you and well done”
