Located on a twenty-two-acre campus, Fareham College is a further educational college based in Hampshire. As part of the South Hampshire College Group, the venue  accommodates students aged sixteen to nineteen, with approximately 1,500 students in each academic year.

With a number of thriving hospitality and catering courses, Fareham College has a main training kitchen which serves the on-site Avenue 141 restaurant, as well as a skills kitchen with individual cook stations for practical exercises.  With increasing student numbers and increasingly outdated equipment,

Steph Couper, Faculty Director for Hospitality and Travel, knew it was time for the kitchens to be refurbished:

“Our training kitchens were not quite fit for purpose; they were becoming dated and we wanted to improve the facilities we have at Fareham College to give students a more contemporary industry experience. Using the latest equipment means we can provide a service that is comparable to what they will get working in a restaurant kitchen”.

Mike Bridger, Project Sales Manager, at preferred supplier HCE, explains the process that they went through when designing the new kitchens:

“The design process involved talking to the lecturing staff to see what their requirements were. In addition, there were a number of people in the M&E related industry and county architects that were involved. As such we had Teams meetings with about 14-15 people at a time at the beginning.”

“The project was completed on time and had minimum impact on our teaching curriculum. I would be pleased to recommend HCE as a company to work alongside for refurbishment of a kitchen in an educational establishment. They have been a pleasure to work alongside and our end product is fantastic.”

As this had a tight time schedule, HCE planned to complete the project during the summer holidays to make sure it was completed in time for the new academic year, as Steph explains

“HCE were able to accommodate the project during the summer holidays which meant the kitchens could be fully occupied and it didn’t affect any of the students learning. It was really important that the project was handed over in time and in budget so that we could move forward with our curriculum programme. The flow of the kitchen is really important to maximise the space that we have and obviously make sure that all the workstations are suitable for a learning environment.”

Mike explains some technical elements of the design that HCE were ready to accommodate:

“The ventilation system was very complex and with both kitchens having separate workings and controls it was something that we had to be aware of. On this particular project we also supplied all the duct works and the fans and the controllers which were actually put on the exterior of the building on a steel framework. Fire suppression is an element that is really required when there’s a risk involved and we tend to put these in in virtually every project that has gas equipment. We also had to maintain some gas here because there wasn’t enough electricity output, even with  equipment optimised to work on lower power. ”

With the project complete and finished on time, Steph was delighted with the final result:

“The project was completed on time and had minimum impact on our teaching curriculum. I would be pleased to recommend HCE as a company to work alongside for refurbishment of a kitchen in an educational establishment. They have been a pleasure to work alongside and our end product is fantastic.”

The project has also proved very popular with the lecturers too, as Patrick McLoughlin explains:

“I come into the kitchen to teach and feel confident and happy that I can now teach using the equipment. This refurbishment ensures Fareham college is now at  a competitive level with state of the art equipment.”

With everything delivered on time, the result was a fantastic refurbishment, Mike was very proud of the job that HCE carried out:

“It’s fabulous to see the end result. It’s been a team collaboration from the design to installation and it is great to see the finished result.”
